The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards, recognizing excellence in television, are presented September 18 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be broadcast live on ABC beginning at 7 PM ET. Jimmy Kimmel is the evening’s host. Among the 2016 contenders are a host of stage stars, including All The Way Tony winner Bryan Cranston, multiple Tony winners Audra McDonald and Viola Davis, Special Tony winner Lily Tomlin, and stage and screen star Benedict Cumberbatch. Playbill.com will live report the winners during the ceremony. Cranston, whose Tony-winning performance as Lyndon B. Johnson in All The Way on Broadway was also seen on the screen in the HBO film adaptation, is nominated for an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Emmy for his work on screen. He is joined in this category by Cumberbatch for Sherlock: The Abominable Price, as well as Courtney B. Vance, Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston and Cuba Gooding, Jr. McDonald also made the leap from stage to screen playing Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. The Tony-winning show was similarly adapted into a special for HBO. She is nominated for an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Emmy for that special. Joining her in this category are Felicity Huffman, Kerry Washington, Kirsten Dunst, Lili Taylor and Sarah Paulson. Davis is nominated for her performance in How to Get Away With Murder in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. Danes is also nominated for this award for her long-running role in the TV series Homeland. Tomlin joins Amy Schumer, Laurie Metcalf, Tracee Ellis Ross, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Ellie Kemper in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series pool. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which stars Kemper, was also nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. Two of the last year’s televised Broadway musicals took home awards at the 2016 Creative Arts Emmys, which were given September 11.
